New women’s magazine in Middle East

Jasad (meaning ‘body’ in Arabic), is a new women’s magazine launched in Lebanon this month. Aimed at ‘encouraging free discussion of the body’ it is set to be controversial at the very least. The handcuffs in the masthead suggest the restrictions already in place on this topic. Opinion is divided, but the magazine is being sold in sealed envelopes (in Lebanon at least) to get around censorship. See the website for more information. Good luck to them.

Women’s magazine exhibition

A new exhibition which I haven’t seen but promises to be interesting for the covers of some of the magazines alone, is on in London. From the very first women’s magazine back in 1693, right up to the present day, and everything in between – the concept really took shape in the 1870s, with problem pages appearing along with ways to “make your life easier everyday”.

Between the Covers: Women’s Magazines and their Readers is at the Women’s Library, London EC1 until 1 April 2009.

Can you make me look 60?

Apparently with no Photoshop involved (although there will doubtless be a chorus of unbelievers) Vogue have disguised a 20 year old model as being everywhere between 10 and 60. They could do a lucrative line in fake IDs…

A wicked way with paper

Anyone who picked up the Guardian last Monday will doubtless have been wowed by the stunning paper-crafted typographic treatments that accompanied the main feature.

They were the work of the almost obscenely talented Yulia Brodskaya. Yulia already has a number of high profile clients to her name as well as an award or two for her mantlepiece and I’d expect things to snowball for her throughout 2009.

Here are a couple of examples of her work for you to admire.

Facelift for the Metro

Although not normally a Metro reader, I happened to pick up a copy on the bus this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find it’s had a bit of a facelift. It’s a pretty good job too – the changes are subtle and the identity of the paper remains intact but it’s a good deal cleaner. We don’t have an old copy around but, if I can lay hands on one, I’ll post up a bit of a compare and contrast.

Get your grid locked…

This one has been popping up all over but, in the unlikely event that you’ve not seen it, The Grid System is a very nifty resource for all things relating to the editorial designer’s best friend. They cover articles, blogs and books as well as resources such as software tools and templates.
