John Paul Thurlow’s Cover Art

Flicking excitedly through my copy of It’s Nice, That vol 3, I spotted the work of John Paul Thurlow who has been busy re-rendering some of his favourite magazine covers as part of a project that will result in a limited edition book and exhibition.

Magazine designers love their covers and there is something about the meticulous process of redrawing these Mac-generated disposable works of art that really appeals.

Seb Lester

Seb Lester is the man behind the Soho Gothic typeface we used for the MDDUS magazine FYi. In addition to creating this typeface he also produces some rather splendid hand crafted lettering which you can peruse on his own typographic folio website.

You’ll also find scans of his working roughs which I always find fascinating, a scrapbook of found type and links directing you to various places which stock his prints.

Au revoir to aurora?

And so the sun sets on aurora magazine, our inflight magazine for Highland Airways. With the airline in administration, all flights cancelled and aircraft grounded, it seems certain that a rescue at this stage is impossible. We knew the company was in trouble, but rumours of a new investor seem unfounded. Continue reading ‘Au revoir to aurora?’

Lady and the Revamp

Well done to The Lady magazine for dragging itself (kicking and screaming) into the 21st century. The venerable women’s weekly (the journal for gentlewomen) has been on the go for 125 years, making it the longest running magazine of its kind. With articles on etiquette and where to find good “help”, the magazine is seeking to reinvent itself for a new generation of ladies. Now with a feisty editor, Rachel Johnson (sister of London Mayor Boris), the magazine is printed in full colour (yes it used to be printed in mono), and has celebrities like Sharon Osbourne on the front cover.

Anyway, I for one will be getting the best china out, pouring myself a cup of Lady Grey and tuning in to Channel 4 on Thursday 18 March at 9pm to watch the Cutting Edge documentary on the rebirth of the magazine. Expect hissy fits and plummy accents in the Covent Garden offices. Continue reading ‘Lady and the Revamp’

KLM digital inflight magazine

Came across this really cool digital version of KLM’s inflight magazine – iFly. Ignores the tired page-turning PDF of the printed page that we see so much of, and instead goes for an innovative, punchy, interactive theme, which I daresay would look fabulous on the iPad…

Anyway, see for yourself and it’s free to subscribe!
