Pass the Port

I am a sucker for magazine launches (not too many of those around just now), and the hype surrounding this publication promised it to be intelligent, witty and stylish.

The double whammy was I had just taken possession of an iPad the same week, and so was able to flick through the physical magazine and also the free digital version!

Merry Christmas… y’all

Another lovely vintage magazine from 1960, called Arizona Highways. I guess they don’t get much snow down there, so the cactii (and candles) serve as the festive cover.

What makes this magazine so fascinating though, is not the kitsch photography, but the fact that whoever owned the magazine before us, had been sent it by a friend who had written all over the pages! Serving as a kind of magazine/postcard, each page has a personalised caption scribbled on in fountain pen.

They wish their friends in Scotland a Merry Christmas, and point out things like “our church” and “a Joshua tree – don’t try to climb it!” Above, they mention a “Lost Dutchman Mine” in Superstition Range. Obviously, they were keen for their Scottish friends to visit Arizona. I wonder if they ever did.

The inside back cover reveals “A Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer”. Brilliant stuff.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Let it snow

Well, it’s the first of December, and half the country is covered in snow – but spare a thought for our cousins in British Columbia – who get more than their fair share of the stuff.

This vintage copy of Beautiful British Columbia is from winter 1974, where, apparently, Christmas is a game of golf.

My wife’s parents (who lived in Orkney) used to subscribe to this magazine – mainly for the stunning landscape photography. The publication was actually produced by the British Columbia Department of Travel Industry – to entice people to visit this amazing part of the world. So that’s where Santa goes on holiday…

Star quality

Speaking of themed issues, Vogue have come up with a cracker this December. Lovely gold foil blocking and a specially commissioned typeface from illustrator Jo Ratcliffe all combine to make this special superstar issue.

Food, glorious food

For some time now I have thought that food magazines are on the rise. Maybe it’s something to do with the recession – eating is our only comfort? After my recent trip to GmbH, the new mag store in Glasgow, I came back with no less than 5 new food-related titles, and there are more out there too.

Mags, mags, mags

Been really busy lately getting our own magazines out – The Keeper (for whisky drinkers) mails next week, The Gallery (for prisoners) delivered today, Practice Manager (for, er, Practice managers) at the printers. Not only have we been busy making mags, we’ve been buying a lot of them too. We have a fairly big backlog of new and interesting titles to tell you about – mainly after our trip to GmbH, the new mag store that opened in Glasgow last month. Plenty of splendid magazines on the shelves there. Here are some pictures, and yes, they are planning to sell coffee soon. Oh, and luckily, they take credit cards…
