Yes, I know this is not magazine related, but Puffin Books are 70 this year, and they have commissioned six artists/designers to choose a favourite book from their childhood, and illustrate the cover. Probably not one for the kids this, as they retail at £100 a shot, but if you fancy getting your hands on The Secret Garden illustrated by Lauren Child, or Little Women by Orla Kiely, then they go on sale on 2 September. With only 1,000 copies of each being printed, these are sure to be very collectable. If you don’t have £100, then try this competition on Vogue.com to win one.

San Francisco Zine Fest kicks off on 4th September 2010. It’s a free two-day event that has been going since 2002.
Vintage Goodwood – (a celebration of all that is great about British culture) begins on Friday. Brainchild of Wayne Hemingway (he of Red or Dead fame) – the festival will consist of music, fashion and all things cultural. I dearly want to go, but it is just too far to travel with the current workload we have. Continue reading ‘Vital Vintage (1940s)’
A nice and varied set of typographic treatments pulled together on the Design Me Too blog (@designmetoo on twitter)
Reminds me a little of the Type Tarts project from the UKType site (our entry was Bellevue du jour, by the way!). You can buy the posters at Old Tom Foolery should you wish. I certainly do.
Effektive Design are offering these cleverly crafted Grid Apps free of charge over on their website.
Every designer loves a good grid! This app acts as a wireframe structure to keep your applications in neat and tidy order on your iPhone or iPad. You can simply press hold and drag and drop your icons into the specific grid spots. A neat idea, and all for free!
If you like magazines and magazine design, you may well already be aware of the MagCulture blog run by Jeremy Leslie. You may or may not be aware that Jeremy has been guest posting for the splendid fellow bloggers It’s Nice That. Go check it out!

Seb Lester is the man behind the Soho Gothic typeface we used for the MDDUS magazine FYi. In addition to creating this typeface he also produces some rather splendid hand crafted lettering which you can peruse on his own typographic folio website.
You’ll also find scans of his working roughs which I always find fascinating, a scrapbook of found type and links directing you to various places which stock his prints.
For my money, this is the most coherent and elegant proposal for what the digital magazine should be. Not only that but he shares my lack of enthusiasm for the seemingly ubiquitous page-turning effect!
