A Greek treasure

Killing time in Athens airport last week, I picked up a free airport magazine called 2board. I flicked through, expecting puffery for the watches, perfumes and sundry cakes on sale all around me. Instead I marvelled at superb photographs, many of Greece, many not, and at absorbing features including one on The Gypsetters, a social group who had hitherto not crossed my radar. These affluent hippies, inspired by Lord Byron, wander the globe in Pucci kaftans, whatever they may be, and keep their American Express Black Cards in crocodile wallets. Nonsense, but enjoyable nonsense, and lavishly illustrated with portraits of  Gypset icons such as Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Brigitte Bardot. All this is seemingly documented in a book entitled Gypset Style, by Julia Chaplin, in case you want to know more. But 2boards real triumph is to look so good while running all its content in two languages – Greek and English. This is a devilishly difficult thing to do. I once had a friend who edited a tri-lingual industry magazine called Pumps, Pompes, Pumpen. He found it far from easy – and he didn’t have to worry about gorgeous layouts.

With the airline in administration, all flights cancelled and aircraft grounded, it seems certain that a rescue at this stage is impossible. We knew the company was in trouble, but rumours of a new investor seem unfounded. Continue reading ‘Au revoir to aurora?’

KLM digital inflight magazine

Came across this really cool digital version of KLM’s inflight magazine – iFly. Ignores the tired page-turning PDF of the printed page that we see so much of, and instead goes for an innovative, punchy, interactive theme, which I daresay would look fabulous on the iPad…

Anyway, see for yourself and it’s free to subscribe!

At the printers…

Our new inflight magazine, aurora, for Highland Airways, went to press on Friday. Of course I couldn’t miss a trip to our printers, Scotprint, who are based in Haddington.

All went really well, with 16 to view printed both sides – so 32 pages passed in one fell swoop! I remember the days when I used to pass every section of Caledonia magazine, but it was only 8 pages to view, single sided. You can imagine how long that took.

Anyway, we are due to get early copies on Wednesday, so will update this post then.
